Self-Aligning Ball Bearings
Self-Aligning ball bearings have two rows of balls, a spherical raceway located in the outer ring, and two deep raceway grooves in the inner ring. The raceway in the outer ring along with the two rows of balls helps to work over a vast range of contact angles. These bearings align themselves accurately with the shaft and assembly without causing tension on the rest of the bearing assembly. This type of bearing is recommended when alignment of the shaft and housing is difficult as the shaft may flex. The outer ring has a spherical raceway and its center of curvature coincides with that of the bearing. This gives the axis of the inner ring, balls and cages an area of deflection. The following are some key considerations and benefits of self-aligning ball bearings:
- Low friction
- High speed performance
- Low noise
- High grade balls and high quality steel
- Accommodate static and dynamic misalignment
- Low maintenance
The size and width of these bearings may also vary according to their use and application. These bearings mostly are for general use. Self-aligning ball bearings can be open or sealed. The design of the bearings permits them to be used in difficult applications. They are often used in textile mining industries, agriculture, heavy machinery, power machinery, and medical devices. Pressed steel, bronze, and polyamide cages are normally used. Since the contact angle is small, the axial capacity will be as well. Available in both the cylindrical and tapered bore, the permissible misalignment has a range of 4 to 7 degrees under normal loads. Self-aligning ball bearings also come in three series, which are 1200, 1300, and 2200.
